Labor secretary Silvestre Bello III announced last week that the government has given the go-ahead for the deployment of an unlimited number of nurses to the United Kingdom.
“We granted the request of the UK to be exempted,” Bello said, referring to the deployment cap of 5,000 healthcare workers. He added that the UK government asked to hire 2,000 to 3,000 nurses per month.
Bello also said that Filipino nurses are in high demand in other countries, not just the UK. Germany has also expressed its desire to hire some 15,000 nurses, but did not ask for an exemption from the deployment cap.
This maximum limit was previously set by the government to ensure that the Philippines does not run out of health professionals serving in the country.
In addition, the labor department also asked for Filipino healthcare workers to be vaccinated, although there is no requirement for vaccination of workers leaving for employment abroad.
