THE SHEPHERD | Danilo Q. Junco
Prior to the antediluvian period or before the flood, the age of man reaches almost 1,000 years and the oldest man recorded in the Bible was Methuselah at 969 years old (Genesis 5:27).
Adam, the first man created by God on earth and mankind’s first parent, died at 930 years old (Genesis 5:5).
After the flood, God shortens the age of man to 120 years old and on the time of Moses, God reduced it to 70 or 80 years old or beyond if he still has the strength (Genesis 6:3; Psalm 90:10).
Researcher in Harvard Medical School finds out that the age of man could have reached nearly 80 years old if he is living with a good environment, proper food intake, exercise, rest, healthy relationship with his family, and neighbors.
This scientific study is congruent to what God said in the Bible though there are individuals who have untimely death not reaching the toddler’s age or at the age of 30, 40, 50 and so forth but the normal age that God sets for a man or a woman to live physically is 70 to 80 years old.
The question that arises in our minds is the reason why God has to shorten the life span of man if He can prolong it to 1,000 years like in Methuselah’s time?
The Bible is clear about God’s answer for this is that because of man’s wickedness or the evil that is built in of man’s nature as God cannot tolerate mankind’s agony due to the evil perpetrated by man himself on earth (Genesis 6:3).
God cannot strive or tolerate man to do all forms of wickedness done by him from Adam and Eve’s descendants to Noah’s time as stated in Genesis 6 that all of them were wicked and corrupt, immoral, violence and etcetera except Noah and his family, whom God spared them from the universal flood that covered the earth as a form of God’s judgment of humanity.
If a man or a woman’s age living here on earth is only 70 or 80 years old, then how should they spend their lives knowing that the lengths of their lives are short or even to us?
We have known that man dies physically as a result of the sins and rebellions of our first parents Adam and Eve and its consequences resulting in sicknesses or diseases, mankind’s afflictions or sufferings, poverty, hardship, and all kinds of evils perpetrated by evil or godless folks.
Our best example on how to spend the shortness of our lives on earth is the Lord Jesus Himself. The Lord Jesus, though He is God, Son of God, lives only for 33 and ½ years.
He began His ministry at the age of 30, the age that Hebrews should start working as rabbi or in religious works and even in society, focusing only on what God His Father commanded Him to do while He was still on earth.
Jesus said before He breathed His last while hanging on the Cross at Golgotha or the place of Skull “it is finished” meaning all that God His Father commanded Him to do He did it completely by owning the sins of all the people of the world and all its punishments.
It is not how long we have spent our lives here on earth but on what God has assigned to each one of us to do and if we have done it in completion like what Jesus did.
Before it is too late, we have to discover for ourselves what God wants us to do and do it faithfully and excellently with the help of the Holy Spirit.
