God forbids praying for departed loved ones

The SHEPHERD | Danilo Q. Junco

The practice of praying or talking to the dead is traced to ancient times even during the time of Moses about 4000 years ago.

God clearly instructed Moses to possess the land of Canaan comprising seven nations because of their practices and one of them is praying or talking to their departed loved ones as stated in Deuteronomy 18:9-14 which is called “necromancer.”

God abhors this kind of pagan practice which is worldwide of its scope, especially to the Gentile nations which have no knowledge of God’s Word the Bible. In fact, God told Moses that these seven nations should be wiped out from the face of the earth or genocide in the modern terminology because of their wicked or sinful practices.

And sad to say that the majority of our countrymen are still practicing this abomination act that God hates most. This is the reason why our country has not been blessed by God financially as our people are poor due to ignorance of His Word and as a result transgress His laws.

The Jewish people then when they adopted this practice, among others, and failed to return to God asking for forgiveness, God banished them from their land for a long time.

Like in the case of the Northern Kingdom Israel, comprising the 10 tribes, those Jewish people who were not killed by the Assyrians, who invaded and captured them in 722 B.C. because of their sins of idolatry, practicing of witchcraft like praying or talking to the dead, were assimilated and eventually practiced with the Assyrian way of life and their culture.

There was no record that these Jewish people were able to return to Israel after their captivity, unlike the Southern Kingdom, comprising the tribes of Judah and Benjamin, invaded by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon in 586 B.C. and after 70 years of their captivity in Babylon, they were able to return to Israel as promised by God through the order of Medes-Persian King Cyrus.

The same sins and practices that the Southern Kingdom did like the Northern Kingdom, God had to release His judgment against them because of their stubbornness.

They did not repent and return to God despite so many reminders from Him, therefore, God has no recourse but to judge them.

It can be recalled that Israel was divided into two kingdoms, northern and southern after King Solomon, son of King David, because his heart was divided due to his 700 wives and 300 concubines as God told him to happen.

When the Jewish people came back to their land after 70 years of exile in Babylon, they forsook idolatry and the abomination practices of the pagan nations.

If our countrymen will continue to disobey God’s immutable laws or His Word, the same thing will happen to us to that of the Jewish people of their first captivity by the Gentile nations of Assyria and Babylon.

For our own sake, we have to obey God’s Word instead of tradition or teaching of the church which is contrary to the Bible.

I appeal to all of you to read the Bible personally and obey what is in it as the Bible is God’s Holy Word and what is written there is absolutely true.
