If Abraham Sales, Toll Regulatory Board executive director executive director, thinks he can rest easy during the holidays, he is dead wrong.
Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has reiterated his demand for the cashiering of Sales for his failure to oversee the smooth implementation of the cashless payment system (or RFID) on the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) which resulted in monstrous traffic jams to the discomfiture of millions of motorists.
During an interview on DZMM Teleradyo just days before Christmas, Gatchalian said Sales should have the good sense to resign before he gets booted out from office for his ineptitude in addressing the glitches of the RFID program of the tollway operator.
Valenzuela City Mayor Rex Gatchalian, the senator’s brother, had earlier suspended the business permit of North Luzon Expressway Corporation after being bombarded with complaints from constituents that the 24/7 traffic congestion caused by the pile-up of vehicles at their toll plazas caused by the faulty RFID machines.
“Matagal na itong problema, pero hindi pinapansin yung aming hinanaing. And the TRB just stood idly by, kahit buhol-buhol ang traffic,” Sen. Gatchalian said.
Until now, Gatchalian said the TRB chief still has to come up with concrete plans to address the woes of long-suffering NLEX users.
As head of the TRB, Gatchalian said Sales is supposed to have full control of the situation, but it appears he is under the thumb of the tollway operator, for whatever reason.
“Dapat maging problem-solver ang hepe ng TRB. Dapat kumuha tayo ng mas agresibong executive director,” he said.
