There’s no doubt that Filipinos’ talents are something to reckon with. This is proven, time and again, by the recognition and accolades our artists, athletes, celebrities and even private individuals receive.
And the winning streaks continue with actor Arjo Atayde bagging the Best Actor plum at the 3rd Asian Academy Creative Awards. The Kapamilya actor actually made history as the first Filipino to win the major award besting other actors from several Asian countries, including South Korea, home to best drama series winner “Crash Landing on You,” and Singapore, where the awards show is based.
Arjo won for his role in the socio-political action series ‘Bagman’ produced by Rein Entertainment and Dreamscape and streamed via iWant.ph. In the 12-part series, he transformed into Benjo Malaya, a barber, who becomes dazed by money and power. Forced to work for a crooked governor — as a getaway driver for a riding-in-tandem assassination and eventually as both the gov’s assistant and enforcer cum vote-buyer and intimidator — his life is turned upside-down as he gets entangled in the dangerous world of politics and complex societal institutions.
Arjo dedicated the award to the people who helped him along the way in his career spanning 11 years in the industry.
“Besides my family, besides my girlfriend, (Maine Mendoza), everyone who believes in me from the start. Each and everyone who helped me along the way, every actor along the way. My journey to this has been a factor on why I learned and whatever the arts toward me, the way they show their brilliance on camera, it helped me, I learned,” he said.
Arjo’s win came after a day or two when the Lovi Poe-Allen Dizon tandem for ‘Latay (The Battered Husband)’ were hailed as Best Actress and Best Actor, respectively at the 10th International Film Festival Manhattan (IFFM).
To Arjo, Lovi and Allen, congratulations and keep up the excellent work!
