FDA oks vaccine mix-and-match

Republika

The country’s Food and Drug Administration has finally given the thumbs up to a clinical trial for mixing and matching Covid19 vaccines.

According to Department of Science and Technology undersecretary Rowena Guevara, the trial would consist of 3,000 participants and would focus on pairing the Chinese-made Sinovac with various brands serving as booster shots.

Three studies would be conducted in the clinical trial. The control group would receive only Sinovac; one group would get Sinovac and a dose of another FDA-approved vaccine; while another group would be given two doses of Sinovac and another vaccine brand as a booster.

“Data coming from this kind of research, including our local study, will also become the basis of the [Department of Health] in updating its recommendations such as interval of boosters, if another vaccine could be an added booster and others,” said Guevara in Tagalog.

She also said that the trial would help rather than hinder the health department’s booster shot rollout to health workers, which started just last week.

“In fact, this study will help gather data on the mix-and-match of vaccines in the Philippines, especially since there are only a few international studies done on Sinovac in combination with other vaccines,” she said.
