Cebu City – A former official of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) has been arrested for his alleged role in the murder last year of a well-known lawyer.
The suspect was identified by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) as a certain Edwin Layese, 51, who was formerly connected with the PDEA’s Western Visayas office.
Layese, reports said, was nabbed in Fuente Osmena inside his Toyota Hi-lux truck which was seen on CCTV as the getaway vehicle used by the assailants of lawyer Joey Luis Wee last Nov. 13.
Wee was walking from the parking lot to his office in Bgy. Kasambagan when he was shot dead.
The NBI said that Layese – supposedly a member of Philippine Military Academy’s Batch 1994 “Bantay Laya” who retired early with a rank of lieutenant colonel – was identified by the alleged gunman, Fausto Peralta, as the mastermind of Wee’s murder.
The NBI claimed Layese was part of a big gun-for-hire syndicate operating in the Visayas region. They said Layese was also involved in the bungled slay attempt on another lawyer, James Gupana, last October 2020 in Lapu Lapu City.
