President Duterte has signed a law increasing jail time for perjury, or lying under oath.
Under Republic Act No. 11594 which was signed into law last October 29, 2021, those who may be found guilty now face a minimum of six years and one day in jail, whereas the previous minimum penalty was six months imprisonment.
The new law also revised Art. 184 by adding the word “willfully” in defining the act of offering false testimony in a judicial/official proceeding.
Both perjury and offering false testimony are bailable offenses.
