Duterte insults unvaxxed people

Republika

President Rodrigo Duterte has gone off on another one of his infamous tirades. This time, he ranted about people who are refusing to be vaccinated, calling them pangit-the Tagalog word for ugly.

This was part of a pre-recorded public address aired on November 9. At the time, he also announced the government’s intent to have a three-day national vaccination drive from November 29 to December 1.

Coinciding with Bonifacio Day on November 30, it aims to help the country achieve inoculation targets for the year.

“With this, we want to convey the message that every Filipino who will get vaccinated… the government wants to say that all who are vaccinated are heroes,” Duterte said. He then called out “the unvaccinated, the ugly ones” in Tagalog.

“Don’t give me problems,” he warned them, adding some choice expletives.
Over 35 million Filipinos have had at least the first dose of their vaccine; nearly 30 million of them are now fully vaccinated. Duterte has instructed the NTF (National Task Force Against COVID-19) alongside the interior department to “further push these numbers upward.”

The President also commented on the beginning of minors being vaccinated, saying it was a welcome development as millions of children would be protected and their elders would be further convinced to get vaccinated as well.

“May I repeat that we cannot lose our focus especially now that cases are down. And this is a further reason to speed up vaccination to prevent another surge,” Duterte said.
