President Duterte is batting for the widespread usage of saliva-based Covid19 testing because it is a cheaper and easier alternative compared to the others. Not to mention its high accuracy rate.
Mr. Duterte cited assertions by Sen. Dick Gordon, who is also the chairman of the Philippine Red Cross, that the Covid saliva-based test is 99 percent accurate.
“E di yan ang gagamitin natin,” he said.
The president also said he hates the RT-PCR test due to the pain caused whenever the swab is stuck into his nostril.
Duterte then ordered the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to hasten evaluation of the saliva tests, which is timely considering that the country’s total is fast approaching the 500,000-mark.
Presently, the nation is using RT-PCR and rapid antigen testing to detect coronavirus in people.
Gordon said that the saliva test kit costs less and provides faster results than the RT-PCR which is considered the gold standard by the Department of Health.
