Philippine National Police (PNP) Corporal (PCpl) Higinio Wayan was drinking with two fellow officers and a civilian friend when he reportedly shot himself in the chest.
The 31-year old officer was part of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD), assigned to the Kamuning Police Station.
On May 30, Wayan, fellow police corporals Sherwin Rebot and Harold Mendoza, as well as the owner of the room at Barangay Commonwealth where the group stayed, Lorenzo Lapay, were winding down after an evening of drinking.
Without warning, Wayan suddenly grabbed Rebot’s service weapon, a .40 caliber Glock, left on the table, aimed at his chest, and asked the others in if they wanted him to shoot himself.
He would then answer his own question by pulling the trigger, instantly ending his own life.
Wayan’s companions immediately called and reported the incident to the Batasan Police Station.
According to QCPD director Brigadier General Antonio Yarra, Mendoza and Rebot have been relieved of duty pending an investigation into the matter.
In related news, another incident of inebriated violence by a police officer recently took place resulting in the murder of 52-year-old Lilybeth Valdez at the hands of Police Master Sergeant Hensie Zinampan.
Zinampan had allegedly been involved in a physical altercation with Valdez’s son days prior to the deadly encounter, wherein the drunk cop would shoot her in the neck as she was on her way to a convenience store the evening of May 31.
