The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said it hired over 1,000 engineers under the Build, Build, Build (BBB) program of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid19) pandemic.
DPWH Secretary Mark Villar said 1,013 engineer positions coterminous with the BBB program were filled up nationwide.
The new employees hired under the government’s massive infrastructure program are composed of 634 males and 379 females.
“These newly-regularized men and women personnel, mostly employed in the Department as contract of service or job order staff for a few years, and the rest of our employees and officials, are the backbone of the success of our BBB Program,” Villar said in a statement.
Those hired were 108 additional work force in the DPWH National Capital Region and its nine District Engineering Offices (DEOs); 153 in Region 3 (Central Luzon); 126 in Region 4-A (Calabarzon); 162 each in Region 5 (Bicol) and Region 6 (Western Visayas); 54 in Region 7 (Central Visayas); 123 in Region 8 (Eastern Visayas); and 125 in Region 10 (Northern Mindanao).
“With adequate and competent manpower, we will be able to deliver more projects on time, and in strict adherence to our design standards,” he said.
Also regularized are 253 individuals previously hired under contract of service in the Central Office. They are now enjoying the security and benefits of permanent employees.
“These job order staff – some have even rendered service for as long as seven years – are all well-deserving and competent personnel who are helping us achieve our country’s Golden Age of Infrastructure,” Villar said.
He added that out of the 253 new permanent employees in the DPWH Central Office, 139 now hold the position of Engineer 2, complemented by 22 new administrative aides; 22 administrative officers; 14 heavy equipment operators; eight administrative assistants; and seven draftsmen.
BBB programs include the building of roads, bridges, and other public infrastructure to spur economic development.
