‘Don’t be choosy’ policy scoffed for seafarers

Republika

Malacanang – bowing to pressure from international shipping firms – has agreed to revoke its “don’t be choosy” vaccination policy for Pinoy seamen.

Reports said the “don’t be choosy” policy was nixed upon representations made by Filipino seafarers unions that thousands of their members are being glossed over in favor of others as the majority of international shipping companies are requiring crewmen to be vaccinated with Western brands such as Pfizer, Moderna, Astrazeneca and J&J, believing these are far superior to China’s Sinovac and Sinopharm brands.

In a recent privilege speech, Sen. Bong Go revealed this ticklish problem confronting Pinoy seafarers.

According to the Labor department, the Philippines is the world’s second-biggest supplier of seamen, after China, with about 500,000 sailing the seven seas with dollar remittances totaling some $7 billion.
