Based on a United States study, the Department of Health reported that veterinary drug ivermectin was found to be ineffective in severe cases of Covid19.
Health undersecretary Rosario Vergeire said that the study shows that “in comparison with standard care or placebo”, the drug did not make any significant changes in the outcome of the patient.
The study further added that ivermectin was “not a viable option” to treat coronavirus patients.
The issue of ivermectin has been a highly controversial one in the country, especially amid the high number of cases. Several months ago, a Dr. Allan Landrito previously manufactured and dispensed the drug to over 8,000 patients.
The Food and Drug Administration had later issued certain hospitals compassionate special permit (CSP) to use in treating severe cases.
Anakalusugan party-list Rep. Mike Defensor and Sagip party-list Rep. Rodante Marcoleta had also initiated a distribution program of ivermectin for Quezon City residents. This move was highly criticized as doctors that had prescribed the drug did so using blank sheets of bond paper without the physician’s license indicated.
Medical groups stood fast behind their statement regarding ivermectin’s ineffectiveness and were concerned over it use influencing the public’s decision to get vaccinated.
