The week-long Dinagyang Festival in honor of Santo Niño in Iloilo City which was supposed to start on Friday, Jan. 15, was canceled due to the spike in coronavirus disease or Covid19 cases in the area.
Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas issued the cancellation of mass gatherings again even after the city government and the Iloilo Festivals Foundation Inc. (IFFI) kicked off last Friday what was supposed to be a week’s worth of activities, both online and live.
Among those included in the ban were the dine-in option for a food festival and a bike fun ride.
The Covid19 team in the city recommended banning mass gatherings anew as the virus cases soared high from Jan. 12 to 14 in comparison to the same dates in December 2020 as the increase in infections ranged from 366 to 700% in those three days alone.
There were 14 new Covid19 cases recorded on Jan. 15 and 16, respectively.
