It won’t be a merry Christmas for several government officials after the operations 11 big quarrying firms in Rizal were ordered suspended by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
Appearing before a recent public hearing conducted by the Senate committee on environment, DENR Sec. Roy Cimatu identified the firms whose Mineral Production Sharing Agreements (MPSAs) were placed on hold as: Asencio-Pinzon Aggregates Corp., San Rafael Development Corp., Montalban Millex Aggregates Corp., Hardrock Aggregates Inc., Rapid City Realty and Development Corp., Oxford Mines Inc., Viba Aggregates & Marketing, Amiterra Aggregates Corp., Dream Rock Resources Phils. Inc., Superior Aggregates Inc. and ATN Holdings Inc.
Senators were told that the activities of said quarrying companies are within the coverage of the Marikina River Basin which drains into the Marikina River, and are suspected to have been greatly contributory to the misery experienced by millions of people downstream during the massive flooding caused by super storms Quinta, Ulysses and Rolly.
Cimatu said their operating permits shall remain indefinitely suspended until a proper assessment by the DENR is determined.
