Davao’s Malagos Chocolates won four of the top awards at the World Drinking Chocolate Competition 2020, the first virtual international chocolate festival.
The Philippine brand won in the following categories: Plain/Origin Drinking Chocolate Dark (made with water); Growing Country, Chocolate Maker and Direct Traded. Malagos Chocolates also won bronze in the Plain/Origin Dark Drinking Chocolate (made with milk) category.
Malagos managing director Rex Puentespina said that the victory confirmed their company’s commitment to excellence in the field of cacao farming and chocolate-making.
The competition was launched to celebrate the origins of chocolate as a drink and the comeback of high-quality drinking chocolate, within the sphere of the craft chocolate movement. The event was also organized by the International Chocolate Awards, which supports makers of fine chocolate, small companies and artisans of fine chocolate.
In 2015, Malagos Chocolates won its first international award in the same category, which placed highlighted not only their brand but Philippine cacao as a whole.
Davao was recently declared the country’s Cacao Capital, as cacao beans became an agricultural commodity. The region contributed 70% of last year’s total national output and makes up about 80% of the total amount produced in the whole country.
