On Sunday, the Philippine National Police charged with rape with homicide and robbery three persons who sexually assaulted and murdered their childhood friend, Norriebi Tria also known as Ebeng Mayor, a 21-year-old transgender man.
The suspects, Zander dela Cruz, Richard Elvin Araza and Joel Loyola were apprehended last week in separate operations.
Dela Cruz was initially called in for questioning at Quezon City Crime Investigation and Detection Unit at Camp Karingal, where he eventually admitted his participation in the murder.
CIDU chief Elmer Monsalve said that Mayor was invited to a drinking session with Dela Cruz and the two others in Brgy. Payatas on Monday. At around 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday, on their way home, Loyola punched Mayor in the gut and took him to the adjacent barangay, where Dela Cruz hit the victim on the head with a rock, after which they took turns raping him.
Mayor was missing for three days before he was found dead in vacant lot on Thursday, May 20.
Police reports said that the suspects took Tria’s cellphone, wristwatch and gold necklace before disposing of his body in Bagong Silangan.
The incident spurred investigation by the Commission of Human Rights, which decried “hate-motivated violence” against members of the LGBTQ+ community.
