A study done by the United States Department of Defense found that that the risk of infection with Covid19 on airliners is “very low”, if passengers remain masked.
The study found that a person would have to fly on a plane for 54 hours with an infected person to receive an infectious dose. The level of transmission over a 12-hour flight was deemed insignificant.
Only an average of 0.003% of air particles within the “breathing zone” surrounding a person’s head is considered infectious, even if every seat was filled, it reported. Masks were also shown to minimize exposure to the virus if someone coughed.
The study was conducted on Boeing long-haul jets by the US military, where researchers measured the volume of airborne contagious matter exhaled by a dummy mimicking an infected person breathing normally.
However, it must be noted that the study only simulated a situation where there was only one infected passenger where everyone wore a mask. It also did not simulate a situation where an infected passenger walked around a plane cabin.
