Covid pills arriving next month

Republika

With promising interim clinical trial findings that showed the possibility of a 50% reduction in severe Covid19 infections leading to hospitalization or death, nations all over the globe have been racing to acquire Merck & Co’s Covid19 antiviral drug as soon as possible.

The revolutionary pill, known as Molnupiravir, would become the world’s very first oral antiviral medication for Covid19 should it be granted use approval by regulatory bodies worldwide.

In light of this, the Philippines has been announced as one of the early birds that will be receiving 300,000 courses of the experimental drug, through the efforts of local, private healthcare importer MedEthix.

According to MedEthix president Monaliza Salian, the 300,000 first batch supply of Molnupiravir will be made available to Covid19 patients in four hospitals next month.

“Molnupiravir can now be accessed by our countrymen upon being prescribed for such use by their respective physicians,” Salian stated.

Because of the drug’s experimental nature, the country’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has only granted Molnupiravir a “compassionate use” approval, in a total of 31 hospitals.

Compassionate use allows for treatments that are still within trial stages, to be given to individuals not part of the clinical research, provided they meet certain, urgent criteria.

Molnupiravir’s price per pill is estimated at P100 to P150 according to the designated local distributor JackPharma pharmaceutical firm’s president Meneleo Hernandez.

As of October 28, a total of 49,835 Covid19 infections remain active in the country, as daily tallies seem to have begun declining from the previous months, yet still remaining well within the thousands.
