THE WAY I SEE IT | Susan Amoroso

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has his hands full. Number one is covid, and the second one is the growing concern of the Filipinos and the world about the presence of more than 200 China-flagged vessels of various sizes and makes (some of them warships) within the maritime and economic zones of the Philippines.

All these are exacerbated by the rising prices of commodities, low production, business closures, growing unemployment which leads to hunger and at worst civil unrest.

There is one aspect which the President can very well do at the moment. He has to command Health Secretary Francisco Duque and the Food and Drug Administration to fast tract the availability of practical, readily available and affordable covid cures and prophylactic medicines. This is to prevent more deaths and hospitalizations due to covid. Presently, the country is far from its goal of vaccinating 70 percent of the country’s 110 million people. As of the moment vaccine czar General Carlito Galvez admitted there are only 3 million covid vaccines left at its disposal nationwide.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque should direct Undersecretary Eric Domingo, who heads the FDA as its Administrator to fast tract the approval of ivermectin and other emerging anti- covid drugs being formulated lately. If the vaccines were given the emergency use authorization, why can’t these alternative drugs be given preferential treatment considering the urgency of its availability to the public. These medicines have been proven safe, without severe side effects and almost 100 percent effective against covid, especially if given in the early stages of the disease. Ivermectin costs just a few hundred pesos per box for the entire treatment. Compare this to the very costly remdisivir’’ which cost P28k per shot.

A female friend and two staff got covid but after taking ivermectin and tons of vitamins got better after three days. The mother who also got infected showed signs of recovery but was still in an oxygen tent. Katrina Ponce Enrile also got cured by taking ivermectin. So is Congressman Mike Defensor. Now let me tell you about another promising anti covid drug calledMolnupiravir’’ which is being formulated in the United States jointly by two giant pharmaceutical companies, “ Rigible’’ in Germany and Merck.

Molnupiravir is an antiviral drug taken orally at home by covid patients in a clinical trial. After five days the patients were cleared of the coronavirus and the patients fully recovered. The initial clinical trials proved the drug Molnupiravir is 100 percent effective against covid.

The drug was originally developed against influenza viruses. It is a compound. The principle is to prevent the virus from replicating itself so as to eliminate the virus quickly and free the body of the virus. On the other hand, the covid vaccine was developed to target the flange of the new coronavirus thereby preventing the combination of the new coronavirus and human cells. The principle of the Molnupiravir is to prevent the virus from replicating itself while the vaccine prevents the coronavirus to combine with the human cell.

The experimental drug was found to be effective against the spread of the coronavirus in mink farms in Norway and Netherlands. Before the Molnupiravir was used, the coronavirus killed millions of minks in these farms. But after the drug was fed to the minks, there was no more coronavirus in 24 hours. Clinical trials on humans are underway.

Molnupiravir is cost effective and the scientific community is saying it will follow the classic trend of aspirin and penicillin where the whole world was benefited immensely.
