Former Mayor Antonio Sanchez of Calauan, Laguna was found dead last week inside his cell at the National Bilibid Prison.
Officials there were no signs of foul play when the lifeless body of Sanchez was discovered by fellow inmates.
Sanchez, who was serving 7 life sentences, gained nationwide notoriety are being implicated in the rape-slay of University of the Philippines (Los Banos) student Eileen Sarmenta and murder of her classmate Allan Gomez in 1993.
Even as he maintained his innocence all throughout, Sanchez was convicted together with several aides in 1995.
Pasig Regional Trial Court Judge Harriet Demetriou, who presided over the trial, was later promoted to head the Commission on Elections.
Sanchez again garnered a lot of attention in 2019 when he was included in the list of 10,000 prisoners to be freed from incarceration prematurely via the Good Conduct Time Allowance Law. But this was aborted to the adverse public opinion that was generated.
The brouhaha led to the firing of Bureau of Corrections chief Nic Faeldon, one of the certified nino bonitos of the incumbent administration.
It should be recalled that Faeldon was shunted to the BuCor after he was relieved of his post at the Bureau of Customs in 2018 in connection with the questionable release of a P6.4-billion shabu shipment from the Port of Manila. Faeldon was later cleared of any culpability by the Department of Justice.
