The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is amenable to the call for the cancellation of the accreditation of the Gabriela party list group for alleged violation of the Election Law and the Constitution.
If the petition being sought by the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) is granted, it will mean Gabriela will no longer be allowed to run in the 2022 national elections.
In a recent resolution, Commissioner Socorro Inting of the Second Division said the NTF-ELCAC has the legal standing to ask for the voiding of Gabriela’s registration for allegedly advocating thje principles of the New People’s Army (NPA) and “receiving foreign government funding and supporting terrorists’ activities.”
The NTF-ELCAC alleged that Gabriela had received funding from the Belgian government, in violation of the Constitution, for its activities.
But the Comelec en banc has not yet ruled on the issue.
To counter, Gabriela said this is nothing but red-tagging and a sinister move on the part of the government to disenfranchise millions of Filipino women whom it has represented in Congress for the past 20 years.
