Chemicals in makeup and shampoo linked to early deaths – study

Republika

A new study recently published in Environmental Pollution has yielded some interesting results about some common chemicals. According to a new study, phthalates are linked to premature deaths. This is particularly true for deaths that are brought on by heart disease.

Phthalates are man-made chemicals typically found in many consumer products. The hundreds of various items range from shampoo, makeup, children’s toys, perfume, and even food-storage containers.

It’s been a known fact amongst scientists for years that phthalates interrupt important functions of hormones. That’s not good news as even the slightest disruptions of hormones can lead to massive effects.

They’re referred to as “everywhere chemicals” since they’re so common.
According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Science in the United States, these can include brain issues, developmental concerns, immune system problems, and reproductive trouble. These are all very serious difficulties that can lead to a number of complications.

Phthalates exposure has also been linked to the likes of diabetes, heart disease, and obesity across multiple studies.

“These chemicals have a rap sheet,” New York University’s Lagone’s Center for the Investigation of Environmental Hazards director and lead author Leonardo Trasande told CNN, “and the fact of the matter is that when you look at the entire body of evidence, it provides a haunting pattern of concern.”

Data from over 5,000 adults between 55 and 64 was analyzed by Trasande alongside colleagues at the New York University Grossman School of Medicine. Amongst the respondents, those who have the highest phthalates level in their urine had a higher likelihood of dying earlier. Furthermore, around 91,000 to 107,000 American adults per year die prematurely given the chemicals.
