Cebu City – Fifty-five heirs of victims of the MV Princess of the Stars tragedy in 2008 are in for a windfall as a Cebu court has awarded them some P199.5 million in monetary damages.
The decision was issued by Judge Dante Corminal of the Cebu Regional Trial Court who said the sinking was the result of the negligence of the ship’s captain.
The MV Princess of the Stars (which was owned by the defunct Cebu City-based Suplicio Lines) capsized off Sibuyan Island off Romblon on January 21, 2008 at the height of Typhoon Frank. Of its 548 listed passengers, only 32 survived.
In 2015, a Manila court also awarded P241 million to the Princess heirs, but, according to Public Attorney’s Office chief Persida Acosta, none of them has received a penny as the decision is still under appeal in higher courts.
