Due to the vaccine’s rare but fatal side effect of blood clotting, the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention has advised Americans to opt for either Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, rather than Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose shot.
This recommendation was decided following a unanimous vote by the health body’s Advisory Committee on Immunization. They added that the vaccine was also less effective at preventing Covid19 compared to the two other jabs.
According to the CDC, 16 million people received J&J’s vaccine out of 200 million fully vaccinated people in the country.
In a statement, the single-dose vaccine manufacturer said that they are prioritizing people’s safety and well-being and that they are willing to collaborate with the CDC moving forward.
Previously, adverse side effects of thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) have been reported in those who received J&J vaccines. In this scenario, blood clots together with low platelet count is life-threatening. It was reported to have occurred mostly in women under 50 years old.
So far, the CDC has detected over 50 cases of TTS in the US. Nine people have died after blood clotting incidents.
