Pope Francis has designated Cardinal Jose Advincula, 68, as the new Archbishop of Manila, replacing Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle.
The post, which symbolizes leadership of the Philippine Catholic Church, has remained vacant for a year when Cardinal Tagle was summoned to the Vatican to serve in a higher capacity. He is currently the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.
Fr. Advincula was the Archbishop of Capiz when he was picked by the Pope to succeed Cardinal Tagle.
Before his Capiz posting, Advincula was Bishop of San Carlos City (Negros Occidental). He was ordained in 1976, after finishing Theology and Canon Law in the University of Santo Tomas.
