A petition to fire actress Amber Heard from her role as Mera in DC Comics’ film, Aquaman 2 has garnered more than 1.5 million signatures late last month.
The petition was created following her ex-husband, Johnny Depp’s requested resignation from the Fantastic Beasts franchise, after losing his libel case last month against British publication, The Sun, for calling him a “wife beater” in a column.
The courts, however, ruled against him, saying that the claim against him was “substantially true.”
In an Instagram post, Depp wrote: “I wish to let you know that I have been asked to resign by Warner Bros. from my role as Grindelwald in ‘Fantastic Beasts’ and I have respected and agreed to that request.”
In a recent statement, Depp said that he planned to appeal the verdict. He said: “My life and career will not be defined by this moment in time.”
The petition aimed to gather 3 million signatures, stating that Heard “has systematically crusaded to ruin Depp in Hollywood” and has lied and made up “false accounts of [Depp] being the abuser.”
The couple divorced in 2017 and Heard has since accused Depp of domestic violence, an allegation that he has repeatedly denied.
Meanwhile, Heard slammed the petition calling for her removal and said: “Paid rumors and paid campaigns on social media don’t dictate casting decisions because they have no basis in reality.”
