Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, Philippine National Police (PNP) officer-in-charge, fired Calbayog City police chief following the killing of the city’s Mayor Ronaldo Aquino, and for having his intelligence aide request the city’s Regional Trial Court (RTC) to provide a list of lawyers alleged to be communists.
Lt. Col. Neil Montaño was dismissed along with nine other commissioned officers of the city police, in concurrence with the PNP chief Gen. Debold Sinas.
Montaño will be replaced by Lt. Col. Rodolfo Alborta.
On March 12 Lt. Fernando Calabria Jr., the city’s police intelligence unit chief, was also dismissed for asking the city’s RTC to provide the names of lawyers representing alleged communist groups.
Maj. Ruel Burlat will be taking Calabria’s post.
Calabria’s action was described by the PNP as irresponsible, as the practice of law is a noble profession and lawyers must represent their clients regardless of background, while not necessarily sharing their views or associations.
The nine other officers were transferred to the Samar provincial police and would undergo a refresher seminar at the recommendation of the Eastern Visayas police.
