Liberal Party (LP) Mayor Ronald Aquino and five others were killed during a shootout last Monday (March 8) with anti-drugs operatives of the Philippine National Police.
Reports said Mayor Aquino was going to the family-owned Villa Marcelina resort for the birthday party of his son, Mark, when he was killed while traversing the Labuyao Bridge in Calbayog.
Rep. Edgar Sarmiento, a close friend of Aquino, alleged that the convoy of the deceased mayor was ambushed by the police for still-undetermined reasons.
But PNP chief Debold Sinas countered this allegation, saying the policemen were fired upon first by Aquino’s bodyguards which occasioned return fire.
Sarmiento said he is calling for a probe into the bloody incident by the House of Representatives in order to shed light into the matter.
Aside from Mayor Aquino, the other fatalities were identified as his bodyguard Sgt. Rodeo Sario; driver Dennis Abayon; P/Capt. Joselito Tabada of the Provincial Anti-drug Enforcement Unit; Staff Sgt. Romeo Laoyon of the Samar police intelligence group; and civilian Clint Yaunder who was hit by a stray bullet.
