In time of emergency and disaster, the “swan” boats used at the Burnham Park in Baguio City can also be tapped for rescue operations like what happened in the flood-stricken Cagayan which Typhoon Ulysses dammed volumes of water to dams in Luzon.
Alerted by the despicable situation, Col. Allen Rae, of the Baguio City Police Office, contacted the boat concessionaires who rent out their popular fiberglass, pedal-powered swan pontoons at the Burnham Park lagoon, if they could borrow their boats for use as rescue boats in Cagayan.
Without exerting effort to persuade the concessionaires, Vivian Celso willingly lent two of her boats which right away brought to Cagayan on Sunday night onboard a boat trailer.
With a design of a swan, each boat can accommodate as many as 10 persons and Celso made a heart-warming comment, saying, “if her boats can help save life, it will all be for a worthy cause.”
The boats have rigid hulls, and are made of fiberglass that would be perfect in navigating through flooded town centers where sharp debris like G.I. sheets, could easily puncture rubber boats.
