Brawner new PA chief

Republika

Assuming the role previously held by current Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief of staff Lt. Gen. Andres Castor Centino, Maj. Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. has officially taken the post of 65th commanding general of the Philippine Army (PA).

The turnover took place at a change of command ceremony at Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City (QC) on December 10.

Brawner has served a reputable tenure in the military, having led several key roles throughout his career.

Through his command of the 4th Infantry Division (4ID), Brawner’s operations against the New People’s Army (NPA) resulted in their demoralization and subsequent mass surrender, after taking down the group’s National Operations Command, Jorge “Ka Oris” Madlos.

Within the AFP, he also served as 6th Infantry Division (6ID) chief of staff, commander of the 2nd Special FOrces Battalion, regiment commander of the Civil-Military Operations Regiment, the first ever Financial Management deputy chief of staff, and spokesperson.

Amidst the Marawi Siege, Brawner was heavily involved in the situation as deputy commander of the Task Force Group Ranao, spokesperson of Task Force Marawi, and eventually commander of the 103rd Infantry Brigade within the war-torn city.

Furthermore, as Philippine Military Academy (PMA) commandant of cadets, he put great effort into the eradication of the long-standing problem of hazing.

At the ceremony in Camp Aguinaldo, Brawner vowed to safeguard each and every soldier of the PA, as well as all Army personnel from the ongoing Covid19 threat, and provide sufficient military aid to President Rodrigo Duterte in order to end insurgency and modernize the PA to a world-class level by 2028.

His appointment was met with praise and congratulations from his predecessor Centino, and Department of Defense (DOD) Secretary Delfin Lorenzana.
