Boracay recently logged its “worst” visitor arrivals last month, following restrictions against traveling to different parts of the country due to the stricter quarantine status in Metro Manila.
From April 1 to 25, only 1,217 visitors visited, majority of whom were from Western Visayas.
The Malay tourism office voiced hopes that Metro Manila would relax to a general community quarantine status to allow more visitors to travel there.
The island, said the tourism office, is “desperate” for travelers to come when it is safe again.
“Boracay generally depends on tourism,” it said. “The island needs tourists to economically survive. Tourists mean business to Boracay. It is an apparent necessity.”
Before the Covid19 pandemic’s resultant lockdowns, hundreds of thousands visited the island in summer.
Since Boracay’s reopening in October last year, tourist arrival numbers climbed steadily and peaked at 17,400 visitors in March last year.
