James “Bong” Gordon Jr., former Zambales congressman and longtime mayor of Olongapo City, died recently.
Gordon’s death was first disclosed by Sen. Migs Zubiri, a former colleague in the House of Representatives decades ago, who offered his condolences to the family of the deceased during a Senate session last week.
Gordon, an alumnus of the Ateneo de Manila, is the son of the late Olongapo Mayor James Gordon Sr. who was assassinated at the steps of his City Hall office in 1967.
Gordon Sr., the son of an American marine, is considered the “Father of Olongapo” as he was responsible in 1959 for its transitioning to Philippine rule, from its status as a military reservation under the jurisdiction of the US Navy.
Gordon, who is the younger brother of Senator Dick Gordon, reportedly died of cardiac arrest while being treated for some ailment at the St. Luke’s Medical Center.
