Washington – The ultimate power couple – Bill and Melinda Gates – have decided to part ways after 27 years.
They have an estimated joint fortune of around $145 billion.
The couple, who are universally-known for their charitable work, are the founders of the Gates Foundation (est. assets $47 billion) which has over two decades donated tens of billions to various philanthropic causes.
Bill Gates, who is principally behind the success of software firm Microsoft Corp., is the world’s fourth richest man after Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Elon Musk of Tesla and Bernard Arnault of LVMH.
Last year, the Gates Foundation pledged $250 million to fight the pandemic, with life-saving vaccines sent to parts of sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
The Gates’ shock split comes some two years after the equally-celebrated separation of Jeff Bezos and wife MacKenzie Scott.
After the dust had lifted, Ms. Scott came away with a divorce settlement of about $38 billion propelling her to the world’s Top 10 list of women billionaires.
