Libmanan, Camarines Sur – A Catholic priest was permanently suspended from his clerical duties after it became clear he was running for mayor in 2022 in this town.
According to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), Fr. Granwell Pitapit was relieved of his ministry when he filed his certificate of candidacy for Libmanan mayor, which is a violation of the Church’s Code of Canon Law that bars priests from participating in politics.
Interestingly, the CBCP disclosed there are two other clergymen who are likewise seeking public office in the 2022 elections – Fr. Emmanuel Alparce of the Diocese of Sorsogon who is running for councilor in Bacacay, Albay, and Fr. Emerson Luego of the Diocese of Tagum who wants to be mayor of Mabini. Davao de Oro.
