Former Camarines Sur Governor and District Representative Luis Villafuerte Sr. died on September 8 at the age of 86.

In an announcement to the press on the day of his father’s passing, his son, Camarines Sur 2nd District Representative LRay Villafuerte confirmed the news.

“It is with great pain and sadness that I announce the demise of a loved and dear one, My Father, Luis R. Villafuerte Sr. one of the most illustrious political leaders of our country,” Villafuerte said.

With a career in public service encompassing five decades, Villafuerte Sr. was regarded by many in the Bicol Region as a political powerhouse.

He began as an assemblyman in 1978 and would go on to serve as the minister of trade from 1979 to 1981 under the dictatorial rule of the late Ferdinand Marcos.

After the bloody Marcos regime was brought to an end, Villafuerte Sr. took office as the Secretary for Government Reorganization for the administration of former president the late Corazon Aquino.

After his time in the national government, Villafuerte Sr. took up posts in Camarines Sur, holding the position of governor for 15 years, then serving as 2nd and 3rd District Representative from 2004 to 2010 and 2010 to 2013, respectively.

The late politician leaves behind his wife, Nelly Favis Villafuerte, three sisters, six children, and their grandkids.
