In an unexpected turn of events, the last day of filing of certificates of candidacy for the 2022 national elections saw ex-Philippine National Police chief Sen. Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa declare his intent to run for the nation’s top spot.
The newest presidential aspirant has joined the government’s ruling PDP-Laban party Cusi wing. Sen. Bong Go will be his running mate.
It has been heavily speculated that Dela Rosa’s filing is merely a tactic by which President Rodrigo Duterte’s daughter, Davao Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio would substitute him and run for the top spot herself.
Dela Rosa was appointed by Duterte as PNP chief, after which he was placed as head of the Vuret of Corrections.
He and Go won as senators in the 2019 midterm polls and will stay on in the Senate even if they do not win.
