Veteran original Pinoy music (OPM) singer Claire Dela Fuente passed away last March 30 due to cardiac arrest. She was 62 years old.
This was confirmed on Twitter by composer-producer Jonathan Manalo, a friend of the family.
Called the Philippines’ own Karen Carpenter, Dela Fuente was known as “Asia’s Sweetest Voice.” She has penned and performed songs such as “Sayang”, “Nakaw na Pag-Ibig” and “Minsan, Minsan.”
She shared the same league as 70s-era “Jukebox Queens” Imelda Papin, Eva Eugenio and Didith Reyes.
It will be recalled that Dela Fuente’s son, Gregorio De Guzman was implicated in the death of flight attendant Christine Dacera last Jan. 1. Dela Fuente had defended her son against these allegations.
Last year, Dela Fuente was also convicted of tax evasion. She had been found by the appellate court in Quezon City to have failed to file her bus company’s income tax returns and pay taxes from 1998 to 2004.
