What do we senior citizens do while waiting for the wand of Covid 19 community quarantine to go away? It’s not so much a problem for my children who do the marketing and others for us in the family. Even when the panic buying is supposed to be on my eldest would only smile away at the long line of people who suffered the kilometric line of shoppers to get to the payment counters. She would either order through the phone or go buy the other things we need at a store that is not so frequented by local buyers.
So much for that. Anyway what can we, as senior citizens, retirees and the like do aside from merely being glued to the television set with our favorite show?
For one thing, we can exercise the moment we wake up from bed. There are a hundred different calisthenics you can chose from if you are without any ideas. As for me, I like to do some Tai Chi, the one for beginners. Fifteen minutes is what I spend on this. The one good thing about Tai Chi is it doesn’t have any jerky or sudden movements. It only requires you to follow the routines and they are so easy to follow.
After that you can have your breakfast which may consist of a hard-boiled egg and fried rice plus a cup of coffee. You can have some fruits in season if you want.
A few minutes rest is what you need after which you can go to your next routine.
My next regular thing is spending some minutes with my potted plants. Although I live in the upper floors of a condominium building, the owner is not so strict about having some plants so I keep a few pots of them myself. I often spend an hour or so with my plants telling them things you normally wouldn’t want others to hear.
After that I would then go on a little hiking up and down the stairway to and from the corridors. I reckon that I normally cover a mile or two with this routine.
Spending siesta is must for me. But after that I go back to my routine which I spend on my computer. There are so many things that you can do on your computer with the advent of technology. You can tune in to Netflix or YouTube or you can just log on to Facebook. You can even spend several minutes or even an hour doing tsismis with your favorite amigo or amiga.
Spending time is no problem if you have a little imagination. Next time somebody comes up to you and asks you what are you doing at home during these community quarantine period, well you know the answer very well.
