Former Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez has announced he is leaving the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (which President Duterte heads) in favor of former Defense Secretary Renato de Villa’s Reporma Party.
According to various published reports, Alvarez (who had served as the very first Speaker of the House of Representatives under the Duterte administration but was ousted in July 2018 after a highly-publicized spat with Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio) had tendered his “irrevocable resignation” as secretary general of the PDP-Laban after some 5 years.
In a press release, Alvarez said he was accepting the offer to lead and revive Reporma as its chairman, but stressed it isn’t in any way related to the 2022 presidential election.
He also thanked PDP-Laban for its support during the 2016 and 2019 elections.
In 2018, Alvarez was ousted as Speaker and replaced by Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo after allegedly irking Mayor Carpio.
