Chairman Benhur Abalos of the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has reportedly quit his high-profile post to join the campaign of presidential hopeful Ferdinand Marcos.
“I effectively render my resignation effective Feb. 7, 2022,” Abalos wrote in his Dear John letter to President Duterte who had appointed him.
Abalos said he wished to devote more time to the Marcos campaign as its national campaign manager.
Abalos was named to the MMDA in January 2021 following the death of retired Gen. Danny Lim.
His successor is MMDA general manager Romando Artes.
Benhur’s father, Ben Abalos Sr., was also a former chairman of the MMDA and the Commission on Elections who achieved some notoriety in the wake of the NBN-ZTE corruption scandal.
In September 2007, an impeachment complaint was filed against Abalos Sr. in connection with the NBN-ZTE deal before the House of Representatives by Iloilo Vice-Gov. Rolex Suplico.
It was endorsed by Bukidnon Rep. Teofisto Guingona III, Zamboanga City Representative Isabelle Climaco and Bayan Muna’s Teddy Casino.
A few days later, on October 1, 2007, Abalos Sr. resigned from the Comelec rather than face an embarrassing investigation.
