The Philippine National Police (PNP) has announced that the nine police officers linked to the murder of Calbayog City Mayor Ronaldo Aquino, recently surrendered themselves to authorities.

Aquino was heading to his son’s birthday party on March 8 last year but was ambushed at the Labuyao Bridge, wherein he and three other individuals were slain in the incident.

According to reports, Aquino’s vehicle was tailed by local cops from the PNP Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group (IMEG), as well as the Police Drug Enforcement Unit (PDEU), who carried out the attack.

PNP Chief Gen. Dionardo Carlos stated that the PNP would provide unbridled cooperation regarding the investigation into the nine suspects that were indicted last January 20 for four different cases of homicide.

The nine alleged killer cops are ex-Lt. Col. Harry Sucayre, ex-Maj. Shyrille Tan, Capt. Dino Goles, Lt. Julio Armeza Jr., ex-Staff Sgt. Neil Cebu, ex-Staff Sgt. Edsel Omega, Staff Sgt. Randy Merelos, Cpl. Julius Garcia, and Pat. Niño Salem.

Following the incident in March, it was revealed during a Senate inquiry by a witness from the PNP that the ambush was planned by Aquino’s political rivals and several local law enforcement personnel.

As of writing, the detainees are currently being held at Camp Crame’s Detective Special Operations Unit (DSOU) custodial area.
