A five-year-old girl claimed she was sexually assaulted by a 7-year-old neighbor boy when she went to retrieve a ball she was playing with that had gone into the boy’s house.
According to published reports, the girl’s mother informed the police of the alleged attack which occurred on October 12, saying that her child was “grabbed by the son of the neighbour’s tenant.”
Police have filed an initial report under child protection laws after the girl provided evidence to a welfare officer.
The boy, currently in his parents’ care, was subjected to a medical exam and is scheduled to appear before a juvenile court to answer the claims
Indian law states that 7 years is the youngest age at which a child can formally be accused of a crime. However, children below 12 years of age can be cleared if they were shown to lack “maturity of understanding” regarding their actions.
