At least 200 residents of Barangay Matandang Balara, Q.C. have tested positive for Covid19 after allegedly violating required health protocols during a series of social events held in their area.
It was learned that Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte had issued a show cause order to concerned grassroots officials to explain why they shouldn’t be criminally charged with violating existing laws which were enacted by Congress to address the pandemic.
City Hall officials said the Bgy. Matandang Balara residents became infected after participating in a mass outdoor gathering occasioned by a wedding of two prominent individuals.
They said this was also compounded by a bible study session conducted in one of the houses which was jampacked with devotees.
A community pantry held under the auspices of a popular 3rd district councilor allegedly contributed to the problem as the beneficiaries became rowdy and unruly.
“The spread could have been prevented but as we see, some people, including barangay officials and others, became lax in the enforcement of minimum health protocols,” Belmonte said.
City Legal Officer Paolo Casimiro said his office had sent a show cause order to Chairman Allan Franza for his failure in handling the virus superspreader events that took place right under his nose, and in permitting social gatherings beyond what is allowed by the IATF.
