Two former mayors of Lasam, Isabela were slain along with two others after getting ambushed by two unidentified assailants on Monday, Feb. 15.
Killed were ex-mayors Marjorie Salazar and Eduardo Asuten, together with driver John Rey Apil and secretary Aiza Manuel. Salazar and Asuten were councilors of Lasam.
They together with their aides were declared dead on arrival at the Lasam District Hospital.
Probers said that the victims died from multiple wounds. They were fired upon by the gunmen while aboard in a Toyota Hi-Ace in Barangay Ignacio B. Jurado on Feb. 15 morning.
Maj. Pablo Tumbali, chief of the Lasam police, said that the gunmen were on-board a Hyundai Accent and a Toyota Wigo.
Salazar’s vehicle, on the other hand, smashed into the wall of the hospital while the suspects fled.
The gunmen left a sign marked “sumampa iti NPA” or the NPA strikes again before escaping. Probers recovered bullet shells at the crime scene.
President Duterte in 2016 tagged Salazar as among local officials involved in illegal drug trafficking. The president’s allegation was based on the discovery of a shabu laboratory in Lasam when Salazar was mayor.
Though Salazar denied the allegation, rumors that she was related to the owner of the property where the shabu laboratory was located, persisted.
