The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced that the first batch of the 4th Generation Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) trainsets of the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) Cavite Extension Project arrived in the country.
The trainsets, the first batch, made up of eight train cars, was the first of a total of 120 train cars for the project.
Imported from Spain and Mexico these train sets will be deployed at the LRT-1 starting in the 4th quarter of this year.
The project, which is now more than halfway complete, will stretch across Baclaran to Niog in Bacoor, Cavite.
Upon completion, travel time from Manila to Cavite will be trimmed down to just 25 minutes, from the current 1 hour and 10 minutes.
Further, it is expected to serve 300,000 to 500,000 passengers.
The project is a partnership among the DOTr, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Light Rail Transit Authority, the Light Rail Manila Corp., Mitsubishi Corp., Spanish rolling stock manufacturer Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocariles (CAF), and CMX Consortium.
