1Sambayan a big joke?

Republika

EDITORIAL

Since its formation on March 18, the so-called super political coalition 1Sambayan, is fast becoming a political joke. Because it is founded solely on its hatred of President Duterte and with zero political platform, it is bound to fail and before election time no one would probably remember it anymore.

The lead convenors of the coalition, all known political opponents of Mr. Duterte, are former Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, former Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario and former Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales. The only goal of 1Sambayan is to get rid of Duterte and his choice to succeed him in the 2022 polls.

Indeed, what binds 1Sambayan’s convenors together is their collective rejection of the so-called abuses of the Duterte regime – from extrajudicial killings in the bloody drug war to the President selling out to China.

Carpio’s beef against Duterte is the latter’s refusal to confront China and his relegating to the backburner the arbitral ruling on the West Philippine Sea which he and del Rosario had worked hard to win at The Hague.

The danger here, argued governance expert Michael Yusingco from the Ateneo School of Government, is 1Sambayan getting stuck in the anti-Duterte narrative. “They could end up failing to articulate the specific programs they can offer to the people – much like what happened to the LP-led Otso Diretso slate in 2019 with its ignominious defeat.

We cannot agree more with Mr. Yusingco. Up to now we have not heard of any program of government that the coalition would like to pursue if it wins in the next election.

The coalition is actually crumbling before it can even start forming its roster of candidates with the withdrawal from its list of presidential hopefuls such as Senator Grace Poe, Manila Mayor Isko Domagoso and Senator Nancy Binay. Only Vice President Leni Robredo and former Senator Antonio Trillanes are left as possible contenders for the presidency under the coalition.

Trillanes, the President’s bete noire who has long been salivating for the presidency, has said that if Robredo decides to run for a local post, he would gladly run for president under the coalition banner.

1Sambayan is party of elitists and former has-beens and if Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio would decide to succeed her father as a candidate of the hoi-polloi, and which we think she would, the candidate of the coalition and other opposition parties should be prepared to eat dust.
